Pune International Airport has modern terminals ensuring a hassle-free journey for passengers. The airport has two terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. However, Terminal 2 has been recently constructed and is expected to be functional this year only.

Pune Airport Terminal 1

Terminal 1 is currently the only integrated terminal at Pune Airport that handles all of the airport’s air traffic. The terminal operates the arrivals and departures of domestic and international flights both. It has the capacity to accommodate 45 pax for arrivals and departures. The terminal features two aerobridges and around 26 check-in counters to offer passengers a convenient and hassle-free experience.

Pune Airport New Terminal – Terminal 2

Pune International Airport Terminal 2 started operations on 14th July 2024. The construction work of the terminal building began in 2018, and the Airports Authority of India invested Rs 40 crore for this new development.

The old terminal building had a built-up area of 22,000 square metres with a passenger handling capacity of 7 million passengers per year. However, the new terminal building spans over 52,000 square metres and has a capacity of handling the travel needs of about 9 million passengers per annum.

All the flight operations at the Pune Airport moved to the New Integrated Terminal Building, i.e., Terminal 2, from 05th March 2025. The new Pune Airport terminal features all the facilities to provide a streamlined travel experience to the passengers. The airport terminal has 10 aerobridges, 25 self-check-in kiosks, 34 check-in counters, and 5 baggage carousels (including 2 dedicated to international arrivals).

About 80 per cent of the total flight operations, including domestic and international flights, was shifted to the new terminal in February 2025. The terminal building incorporates traditional art and architectural elements reflecting Maharashtra’s rich cultural heritage.

The building has a VIP lounge and offers independent access to the airport terminal building. All the AAI offices and the Central Industrial Security Force will be shifted to the new administrative block, thereby leaving more space in the terminal building. The airport power substation close to the entrance gate will also move to the new building, creating more space for developing amenities for passengers.

How to Reach Pune International Airport from the City

Getting around to the airport from Pune city takes 30 minutes to one hour, depending upon the traffic. The best means to reach Pune City Centre from the airport is to hire a taxi. You can get a taxi from the taxi booth available at the airport’s arrivals entrance. Auto rickshaws also run from the airport and are usually cheaper. Besides, you can avail of a local bus service. However, buses are generally crowded. A taxi or a rickshaw is a better option.

The city serves extensive and inexpensive bus service, but the local buses are always smoky and crowded. You will find an army of auto rickshaws there, but the city has limited prepaid rickshaw stands. While travelling by auto, make sure the meter is running and know where they are taking you. Also, keep in mind that you might have to pay a little extra.

Pune International Airport Infrastructure Upgrade

Pune International Airport has been planned to get an infrastructure upgrade soon. As per the expansion plan, three remote bays and five additional aircraft parking bays will be constructed at the airport.

Pune Airport Authority is all set to receive about 13 acres of land parcels from the Airport Authority of India to continue with the expansion project. The land parcel will be allocated to the authority by March 2025.

Currently, Pune International Airport has ten aerobridges and ten aircraft parking bays. The decision to expand the parking space in the area has been taken due to increasing congestion issues.

Pune International Airport Rename Proposal

In September 2024, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari proposed changing the name of the Pune International Airport after Sant Tukaram. The Maharashtra State Cabinet has approved the proposal and decided to rename the airport as Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj International Airport.

The proposal for the same has been sent to the Central Government for approval. It will also be sent to the Civil Aviation Ministry for further actions and approvals.
