About Dwarka Expressway

Dwarka Expressway stretches from Dwarka in Delhi to Kherki Daula Toll Plaza in Gurugram, Haryana. The primary aim behind constructing the Dwarka Expressway in Delhi was to develop an alternate road link between Delhi and Gurugram. This would ease the traffic congestion on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway. 

It was initially planned in 2006, and its construction contract was awarded in 2011. In 2016, 14 kilometres out of the original 18 kilometres were completed. However, the project scope was extended.

The initial construction of the 14 kilometres did not take much time. However, the remaining construction was delayed due to tree transplantation hurdles and land acquisition issues. The delay and the issues causing it soon came to notice, leading to the Prime Minister’s office stepping in November 2018 to solve the issues. This resulted in Haryana and Delhi handling the remaining 10 kilometres of the road. 

The construction faced delays due to several factors, notably the necessity for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to transplant over 13,000 trees along the proposed route. In November 2018, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal approved this transplantation. 

In January 2018, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) agreed to transfer the required land to NHAI. Subsequently, in December 2018, the Haryana government handed over a 10-kilometre stretch of land for the expressway’s development.
