The detailed project report for the stretch between Koyambedu and Pattabiram has been prepared and submitted by Chennai Metro Rail Limited. The route includes 19 elevated metro stations with other metro stations in the corridor. This Chennai Metro Red Line corridor will enhance the connectivity of regions located along the route. The metro line has been planned to run along the Outer Ring Road in the city. 

The estimated cost for this extension of the Red Line of the Chennai metro is Rs.9,744 crore. The total length of the metro corridor is 21.76 km. The route will enhance transportation by improving connectivity with Avadi Bus Terminus, Ambattur Estate Terminus, and Avadi Railway Station. The route is expected to have three integrated flyovers. Key locations of these flyovers are near Dunlop, at Ambattur Estate bus depot junction, and in front of Avadi Bus Stand.

Current Status of Chennai Metro Red Line

The construction of Chennai Metro Line 5 (Red Line) is making good progress. Work has started on one of the stretches, a significant step forward in the project.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials have said construction of piers along Line 5 is underway. Around 1,500 piers need to be built in total. So far, about 150 piers have been completed between Madhavaram and Koyambedu, 142 between Koyambedu and Ullagaram, and 205 between Ullagaram and Elcot.

The first operational stretch within Chennai Metro Red Line (Line 5), between Madhavaram and Retteri, is expected to be ready by the end of 2026. Track work on this section will start in the coming months. The installation of overhead electrical equipment is also expected to begin around the same time.

Most stretches in this corridor are elevated, which has made construction progress faster and less challenging than the underground section.

Features of Chennai Metro Red Line

Currently, Chennai metro line 5 is under construction, and it is being constructed using the latest technologies. Following are some of the salient features of the metro line:-

  • Elevated stations: The majority of the stations on the Chennai metro red line are elevated, which will help reduce traffic congestion and land acquisition costs.

  • Underpass stations: Six metro stations on Chennai metro line 5 will be constructed using the cut-and-cover method, which is less disruptive for traffic. 

  • Automatic train operation (ATO): To ensure safe and efficient metro train operations, Automatic Train Operation (ATO) will be used for Chennai metro line 5.  

  • Passenger information systems: To give real-time information about train arrival time, fare depot station and more, the Red Line metro of Chennai is equipped with a real-time information system.
