Kolkata Metro Line 2 Overview
The inception of Kolkata Metro Line 2 dates back to the city’s 1971 master plan. Inspired by the success of the Delhi Metro, the corridor gained momentum. A feasibility study was held in 2004 proposing tubular structures beneath the Hooghly River. Using a cost-sharing model, the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRC) took charge in 2009. But, challenges like land acquisition and slum relocation led to delays.ย
Since its inauguration by Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on February 14, 2020, the Green Line has been weaving together Kolkata’s cultural heritage and business vitality. Spanning 17 stations, with 11 elevated and 6 underground, this transit artery covers 22 km. It is a vital link between India’s two largest commuter and long-distance railway terminals, Howrah Junction and Sealdah Station.ย
Traversing beneath the iconic Hooghly River, Kolkata Metro Line 2 boasts India’s largest underwater metro tunnel and the deepest metro shaft at Howrah station, a remarkable 33 meters deep.
Beyond its practicality, Line 2 is a testament to Kolkata’s commitment to modernization. Boasting India’s largest underwater metro tunnel and the deepest metro shaft at Howrah station (33 meters deep), it heralds a new era in urban transportation. The Green Line blends the city’s industrial and IT hubs, uniting Howrah’s industrial prowess with Salt Lake Sector V’s technological vibrancy.

Kolkata Metro Line 2 Current Status & Completion
The construction work of the Esplanade-Sealdah stretch of the Kolkata Metro Line 2 has been expedited by the authorities. This is the only unfurnished metro stretch of the Kolkata Metro East-West Corridor. The tunnelling and electrical works of the stretch have been completed.
Currently, Kolkata Metro Green Line is operational in two sections, Howrah Maidan to Esplanade and Salt Lake Sector V to Sealdah. The authorities have initiated a crucial inspection for the Esplanade and Salt Lake Sector V to Sealdah stretch. The assessment will be conducted by the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS). Operated under the Civil Aviation Ministry, CRS is the autonomous body responsible for granting safety clearance for new metro lines across India.
The Esplanade to Sealdah stretch of the Kolkata Metro Green Line is expected to become operational for the public in April 2025. The inspection will be completed by the end of March 2025. Once done, the detailed report with all the information related to the CBTC software upgrade will be shared with the authorities. After the completion of this inspection, CRS will conduct their own inspection and make the route operational if everything falls right in place.
The authority has planned to finish the tunnel work of the Howrah-bound (west-bound) by the end of this year. Once the tunnelling work is completed, the carrier will start with the electrical and signalling works for the stretch.
Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation has disclosed that once the entire Kolkata Metro Green Line becomes operational, it will link Salt Lake Sector V to Howrah Maidan Metro Stations.
