Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 is an extension of the existing Hyderabad Metro Rail network, designed to connect more city areas with an efficient and sustainable mode of transportation. The Phase 2 project is a continuation of the Phase 1 project, which was completed in 2020 and currently has three operational lines covering a distance of about 70 km.

About Hyderabad Metro Phase 2

The Phase 2 project will add another 63 km of the metro rail network. The proposed lines will cover various areas of the city, including Gachibowli, the airport, and other major residential and commercial areas. The project will also include an interchange station at Raidurg, connecting to the Outer Ring Road, which is expected to improve connectivity to other parts of the city.

Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) will execute the project at an estimated cost of Rs 24,200 crore. The development method for this phase is yet to be finalized, and it could be through EPC or PPP (Public-Private Partnership) route.

The Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has been taking various measures to ensure that the Phase 2 project is completed on time and with the highest quality standards. An elevated Hyderabad Bus Rapid Transit System, covering a distance of 20 km between Kokapet Neopolis and KPHB Colony Metro Station, will be constructed by the Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited and HMDA.

The Phase 2 project is expected to provide a much-needed boost to public transportation in Hyderabad, which relies heavily on buses and private vehicles. Hyderabad Metro Phase 2: Project DetailsΒ 

On 26th Oct 2024, the state cabinet of Telangana approved the Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 project. The estimated cost of the project is Rs.24,200 crore. The Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 project is expected to span over 76.4 km. The approval comprises of five corridors,Β 

Red Line Extension: About 14 km from Miyapur to Patancheruvu

Blue Line Extension: About 29 Km from Nagole to Shamshabad Airport via LB Nagar and Chandrayangutta

Blue Line Extension: About 8 km from Raidurg to Kokapet

Red Line Extension: About 8 km from LB Nagar to Hayathnagar via Vanasthalipuram

Green Line Extension: About 7 km from MGBS to Chandrayangutta via Old City and Falaknuma

As per the Cabinet approval, the project will be built based on the Public-Private Partnership model in collaboration with the Central Government. The final approval for the Detailed Project Report is still pending from the Centre.

Hyderabad Metro Phase 2: Red Line Extension Route Map

On January 19, 2025, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited released the route map for two stretches: Miyapur to Patancheru and LB Nagar to Hayathnagar.

The 13.4 km route between Miyapur and Patancheru will have about ten metro stations. According to the officials, the proposed metro stations on the Hyderabad Metro Red Line Extension include Patancheru, Beeramguda, Miyapur, Jyoti Nagar, Alwyn X Road, Madinaguda, BHEL, RC Puram, and Chanda Nagar. Once operational, the metro corridor will help fix the traffic congestion issues.

The stretch between LB Nagar and Hayathnagar will have six metro stations spanning over 7.1 km. The officials have stated that the list of metro stations is tentative and may undergo some changes in the future.Β 

Hyderabad Metro Phase 2: Purple Line

The Hyderabad Metro Rail Authority has proposed constructing a Purple Line Metro from Nagole (Airport) and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA). The metro route will span over 36.8 km. Once operational, the route will enhance the connectivity of various regions with the airport.Β 

As per the reports, the authorised officials are working on the detailed project report of the Purple Line of the Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 project. It is expected to be submitted to the State Government soon. Once approved, the proposal for the metro line construction will be sent to the Central Government for further clearance.Β 

The metro route will have 24 metro stations, including Nagole (Airport), Nagole X Road, Alkapuri Junction, Kamineni Hospital, LB Nagar (Airport), Balapur Road, DRDO Kanchanbagh, Owasi Hospital, Chandrayangutta, Bandlaguda Road, Mailardevpally, Aramghar, New High Court, Gaganpahad, Satamrai, Siddanthi, Shamshabad, Cargo, and RGIA (Rajiv Gandhi International Airport). The names of the remaining metro stations will be disclosed after the detailed project report on the route is completed.

Hyderabad Airport Metro Express Line

The proposed Hyderabad Metro Airport Express Line will be a semi-high-speed rail connecting Mindspace Junction and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad. It will span 10 stations over a 32-km distance.Β 

This line is part of the Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 project, which will be funded by the Telangana Government and executed by HAML (Hyderabad Airport Metro Ltd). Telangana’s Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for this project on December 9, 2022.

In 2018-19, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) prepared this line’s Detailed Project Report (DPR). The line is expected to be fully operational by 2030. Trains consisting of 3 coaches (expandable to 6) will run on this line, with a maximum speed of 120 kmph.

Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 Development Authority

The Managing Director of Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited has disclosed that the State Government of Telangana has decided to take up the Phase 2 Project management task in collaboration with the Central Government. As per the officials, no private firm is willing to take up the construction project. This is because L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad bore losses while constructing the Hyderabad Metro Phase 1 Project.

The funds for the sanctioned estimated cost of the project, Rs.24,269 crore, will be raised through loans from banking agencies, including JICA. The project has been approved by the state government and sent to the central government for further approval. Once approved, construction work will start.
